Geography

Indonesia is probably the most expansive archipelago in the World with 5000 kilometers stretch from Sabang at the northern tip of Sumatra to Merauke at South Eastern Irian Jaya.

We said in Indonesian “Dari Sabang sampai Merauke” literally means from Sabang to Merauke.

It’s stretch north and south of the equator of total 1770 km from the border with Sabah to the small island at the southern tip of Timor.

Indonesian island contains more than 13,000 islands where 6000 islands are inhabited.

The main island in Indonesia are:

  • Sumatra
  • Java
  • Kalimantan
  • Sulawesi
  • Irian Jaya

Most of country contains water. The total land and sea area is 2 ½ bigger than the land area of Australia. But the total land area is just a little bigger than Queensland.

We said the term in Indonesian “Tanah Air kita” literally means Our water and earth.




The weather

Because of the position in Equator, Indonesia has always the same time of the sunrise and the sunset the whole year.

Sunrise is always at 6 am en the sunset at 6 pm. Pretty handy actually, we don’t have to worry about to forward or backward the watch like in Europe or UK.

And this position makes the climate also the same the whole year, hot and generally humid during the day and warm during the night.

This kind of climate is mostly the climate of the cities which the location not far from the sea. Like Jakarta, Surabaya and Semarang. During the day these cities are incredibly hot and warm during the night. It’s not easy to sleep in these cities, you need an air conditioning to get in sleep.

Like Bandung in West Java or Malang in East Java, these kinds of cities lies on the mountainous area, that makes this cities pleasant places to stay overnight with cooler climate.

But regardless where you are, if you go on the top of the hills and mountains the temperature drops dramatically , in the evenings and during the night, it can be incredible cold.

Take for an example Mount Bromo, if you go up to this mountain early in the early morning, don’t forget to wear warm clothes, it certainly needed.

There are no 4 seasons in Indonesia. We have only two seasons, dry and wet seasons. The wet seasons falls between October and April and the dry season between May and September. Although in some parts of land you can barely notice between these two seasons.

For Sumatra, Java, West and Central Kalimantan

GMT + 07:00

For Bali, Nusa Tenggara, South and East Kalimantan, Sulawesi

GMT + 08:00

For Irian Jaya and Maluku

GMT + 09:00



The Population

Another Indonesia facts is that Indonesia has more than 245 million people. And the most of them live in Java. Because of that Java is the most populated island in the world.

In another island, bigger than Java like Sumatra and Kalimantan, are less populated. Java is attractive for many people from another island.
