The name of Tangkuban Perahu, means upturning a boat , refer to the local legend of Dayang Sumbi.

Dayang Sumbi is a beauty who lived in West Java. She cast away her soon Sangkuariang for his disobedience. The gods feel sorry for her and granted the eternal youth. After many years in exile, Sangkuariang decided to go home. Mother and soon didn’t recognized each other. Sangkuriang fell in love with Dayang Sumbi, and planned to marry her. Just before Sangkuariang to go hunting, recognized Dayang Sumbi his birthmark. To prevent the wedding, Dayang Sumbi asked Sangkuariang to build a dam on the river Citarum and a large boat to across the river before sunrise.

Sangkuariang asked Buta Hejo (Green Ugly Giant) to do the job. When Dayang Sumbi saw that the job almost done, she asked her worker to spread red silk cloths east of the city to make a look like the sun is rising. Sangkuariang was fooled, and truly believed that he had failed, kicked the dam and the unfinished boat, resulted in severe flooding and the creation of this mountain.

The best time to visit is after the rain, the clouds from the lava heat is very beautiful after the rain. If you go there with a sunny day, it maybe not so pleasant because the heat is too much, bring the umbrella if you need it.

This volcano offers many places to see and explore. Whether we look into the huge crater or hike down into it or take a walk through the forest on its slopes.

Souvenir market at Tangkuban Perahu

Around the crater, you will find market that sold everything. From souvenirs until milk or snacks.

Some of snacks are worth to try. But if you want more fancy snacks, you have to go to Bandung. There are numerous delicious snacks.

Some of souvenirs are nice and you can buy some for your children or grand children.

This is the only crater that accessible by car. You can drive until the parking place.

But the road to go there is very bad. Be prepared. You might be need travel tablet, especially for your little children.
